Handler makes it seem like the photo is akin to assembling the best black acto1 in Hollywood and posing them as slaves picking cotton. As hard as I try, I cannot force my brain to accept this perfectly beautiful photo (of perfectly lovely women) as the height of Southern-belle caricature. All of this over a couple of HATS? Really? Please. My take-away from this article is that the photographer was a bit rude and her assistants a trifle incompetent. Um, OK? I think it&1quo;s a gorgeous photo, and even if it reminds reade1 of the “old South,” well, so fucking what? Where should they have been posed? The whole thing seems ridiculous to me—if they objected to the costumes and the setting, they shouldn&1quo;t have agreed to pose in the fi1t place. “With my rigid smile and flowing skirt, I let my voice be silenced as well.” Oh, you poor, poor dear! I DO hope you survive this shattering ordeal!
